There are three kinds of crate: randomized crates, lootbox (selection) crates and exchange crates. Most crates are randomized.
Randomized crates#
A randomized crate rolls its rewards from weighted lists.
- Rewards are split into categories such as a themed set or "Tools". Each category has its own list and a number of items given per opening.
- Every reward has a weight; the chance of a reward is its weight divided by the total weight of the category. The preview shows the chance of each reward.
- A crate can add guaranteed rewards or milestone rewards based on how often you opened it, see Opening Crates.
- Some crates offer rerolls and some have an expiry date: after it, keys are kept but the crate can no longer be opened.
Lootbox crates#
In a lootbox crate you choose. Right-click with the key (or a lootbox item) and a window titled "Select N items" shows the available rewards by category. Click rewards to select or unselect them, then confirm your selection in the summary window ("Confirm your selection"). Lootbox selection crates exist as seasonal lootboxes on some gamemodes.
Many crates called "lootbox" are randomized crates with a lootbox animation, not selection crates. See Crate Lists.
Exchange crates#
An exchange crate trades keys for a reward you choose: each reward lists a key cost. Click the reward, then Accept the trade if you hold enough keys ("You can't afford this item" otherwise). Older holiday crates also work this way. Each reward's key cost is in the tables on Crate Lists.
Eggs#
Prison's egg crates hatch minions: place the key on the ground to hatch the egg. Their sites only show a preview. Minions are covered on Minions.
Pouches and megaboxes#
Pouches are small bonus crates earned from milestones. Megaboxes are seasonal multi-reward boxes.
