The captcha is a short check that confirms a real person is playing. It appears after long stretches of repetitive mining, mob killing or fishing, and it takes a few seconds to pass. It runs on the hub, Skyblock, Prison and Survival and is not used in Lifesteal.
When it appears#
You may get a captcha when you have been repeating the same kind of action for a while without a break:
- breaking a large number of blocks,
- killing a large number of mobs, or
- catching a large number of fish.
It only triggers while you are actively playing, never while you are idle. The exact amounts are not published. Normal play does not trigger it often, but automated mining, farming or fishing does, and so can very long sessions of hand-mining.
What you see#
- A map item appears in your first hotbar slot and is selected. The map shows the code.
- In chat you see "Please complete the captcha to continue playing! Check the map in your main hand." and the action bar repeats "Please check the map in your main hand to complete the captcha." A bass note plays about every 3 seconds as a reminder.
- Whatever was in your first slot is put back when you finish.
How to pass it#
Type the code from the map in chat and send it. Do not use a command.
- The code is 4 characters: letters and the digits 2 to 9. Letters can be upper or lower case, and the match is case sensitive, so type it exactly as shown.
- Characters that are easy to confuse are never used: there is no
i,l,o,0or1. - On success you see "Captcha completed successfully!" (on Survival: "Captcha Passed! Verification successful!") and play continues. Your normal item returns to your first slot.
Wrong answers#
A wrong answer shows "Invalid captcha code. You have N attempts left." and draws a brand new code and picture, so a code you read earlier is useless. You have 10 attempts in total.
While the captcha is active#
You cannot play until you answer. The captcha blocks:
- moving horizontally (you can still look around and jump),
- breaking and placing blocks,
- interacting, fishing, dropping or picking up items, and swapping hands,
- changing your selected hotbar slot, moving items and opening inventories,
- using commands, and
- fighting: you cannot attack, and you take no damage.
Anything you type in chat that is not the right code is treated as a guess and is not sent to other players.
If you fail#
You are removed from the server with the message Captcha Failed: timeout if you do not answer within 2 minutes, or Captcha Failed: too many failed attempts if you use all 10 attempts. Your item is returned to you first. You can rejoin right away, but you may get a captcha again after you reconnect: if you disconnect while one is pending, it is given to you again when you return.
Tips#
- Read the map in your hand, not the chat message. The picture changes after every wrong answer.
- If you keep getting captchas during normal hand-mining, take a short break between long grinding sessions. If you believe it is a bug, open a ticket (Support Tickets) and say which mode you were in.
- Macroing and autoclicking are punishable offences (Punishments).
