Server Resource Pack

How the Netherite resource pack is offered, why custom items and menus need it, and the reminders you get if you decline it.

The Netherite resource pack adds the custom models, items and menu graphics that the gamemodes rely on. Without it, custom items look like plain vanilla items and menus can look wrong. The pack is optional on Java Edition and applied automatically on Bedrock.

How the offer works (Java)#

  1. On join, the network holds your login briefly. The pack is offered while the "Joining world" screen is showing, and the network waits for your answer for up to 30 seconds so the pack is already applied when you can move.
  2. The prompt. You see: "This server uses a resource pack for its custom items, models and menus. Accept it to see them the way they are meant to look." Accept it.
  3. Switching servers. Moving to another part of the network keeps the pack you already have and does not ask again about the same pack. If the pack was updated since you last answered, the switch offers the new version on the loading screen.
  4. Nobody is kicked. If you decline, fail to download it, or let the 30 seconds run out, you stay connected.

If you play without the pack#

What you noticeWhen
A one-time chat message: "You're playing without the Netherite resource pack, so custom items and menus will look vanilla." It tells you to set Server Resource Packs to Enabled.About 5 seconds after you decline
After a 45 second grace period, reminders: a chat message "You're still playing without the server resource pack...", a red Resource pack missing title, and a sound.Repeats every 2 minutes
The pack is offered again.Every 5 minutes, at most 3 times for a client that keeps declining

The reminders stop when the pack loads. If your client keeps failing to download or apply the pack, the network offers it at most 2 more times and then leaves you alone.

Bedrock and console#

Bedrock and console players receive the pack automatically when they join and cannot decline it. There is no prompt and no reminder. See Joining on Bedrock Edition.
