Prison crates are keyed loot boxes. You collect keys from progression, voting and the store, then open them for pickaxe enchant tokens, rank skips, boosters, pouches, skins and minions. Some crates are earned by playing, some are sold in the store, and event crates come and go. This page covers how crates work in Prison and which crates are permanent. The shared rules for all game modes are on Crates and Crate Keys.
Finding the crates#
Run /warp crates or open /warps and click Crates (an ender chest). The Prison help menu also has a Crates button that sends you to the same warp.
Some crates must be opened at their crate block. Others can be opened anywhere, so you can open them in your mine or on your plot.
Keys#
A crate key is an item in your inventory. Each crate has its own key with its own name, so a Vote Crate Key does not open a Prestige Crate. One key is one opening. Keys in your main inventory and hotbar count.
| Where the key comes from | Crates |
|---|---|
| Playing Prison | Prestige (every prestige), Rebirth (every rebirth) |
| Voting | Vote |
| Chat typing games | Epic |
| The store | Store crates and event crates (the rotating selection changes, so check the store) |
Keys are items, so a key that does not fit in a full inventory is handled like any other item (see Rewards and delivery below).
Opening a crate#
At a crate block#
Right-click the crate block while you have the key in your inventory. The key is taken automatically; you do not need to hold it. If one block holds several crates and you carry keys for more than one of them, hold the key you want to use, otherwise you see "Hold the key for the crate you want to open!". With no key you see "You don't have a key required to open this crate!".
Clicking crate blocks is rate-limited to once per 1 second. If you click again too quickly you see "You must wait (time) before previewing another crate!".
Anywhere#
Crates marked Anywhere in the table below can be opened from any place. Hold the key and right-click any block: the animation plays where you clicked.
Opening many keys at once#
You can skip the animation and open a whole stack in one go.
- At a crate block or with the key in hand: hold Shift while you right-click. That opens up to 64 keys of that crate at once.
/crate openall <crate>opens up to 64 keys of an Anywhere crate. Crates that must be opened at a crate block answer "Open this crate at its crate site."
A bulk opening gives every key its full set of rewards straight to you with no animation, no reroll offer and no announcement in chat. It still counts toward your opened total. A single key always plays the animation.
Previewing a crate#
Left-click a crate block to see what it can give. The preview menu is titled "(crate) Preview" and has one tab per reward category, shown as icons along the bottom row. Every item shows its chance of coming up. Chances are per category: each category rolls on its own, and the chances inside one category add up to 100%.
Crates with a milestone bonus add a milestone icon to the bottom row. It lists the milestone rewards, the opens at which they unlock, how many times you have opened the crate and how many opens are left to the next one. Crates that hold a linked pouch add the pouch's rewards as extra tabs, for example a seasonal collection crate and its pouch of pets and cosmetics.
Every crate page lists the full reward table with chances.
How the animation works#
Each crate has an animation style. The reward is decided before the animation starts, so you cannot change the result by closing or clicking.
| Style | What you see | Crates |
|---|---|---|
| Menu | A menu opens with a reel of items for each reward. Each reel spins in turn, slows down and stops on the highlighted center slot. You cannot close the menu until the spin ends | Vote, Epic, store crates and some event crates |
| Lootbox | One floating item per reward orbits in a ring above you, cycling through possible rewards faster and then slower, until each settles on its prize with lightning and a burst of fireworks | Prestige, Rebirth and some event crates |
| Unboxing | A box appears where you opened it, charges up, bursts open and deals out the rewards one by one from most common to rarest. The rarest reward gets a pause and the biggest effect | Some event lootboxes |
| Hatching | An egg appears where you placed the key and hatches in a burst of particles, leaving your reward standing where it broke | The three minion eggs |
Bedrock players see the Menu spin instead of the Unboxing and Hatching scenes, with the same result.
Rewards and delivery#
Prison crates can roll several rewards in one opening. A crate has one or more reward categories. Each category rolls its own rewards independently (some roll more than once), so one opening can give 1, 3 or 4 rewards, and the same reward can come up twice in a category that rolls more than once.
- Items go to your inventory. If your inventory is full, they are stored in your overflow backpack. Open it with
/overflow. If the backpack is full too, you see "Your overflow backpack is full! An item was dropped on the ground instead." - Currency such as beacons is paid straight to your balance.
- If you log off mid-animation, the rewards are still delivered: items go to your overflow and currency is paid.
- Pickaxe enchant tokens are applied by clicking the token onto your pickaxe. A token shows its apply chance, and Mystery Dust raises that chance. See The Pickaxe and Prison Enchants.
- Rank Skips, Prestige Skips and Rebirth Skips move you up the ladder when used. See Ranks.
Announcements#
Most crates announce in chat that someone is opening them and what they won, one line for every reward (some lootboxes send one combined line instead). Each crate page says which announcements it has. The Vote and Epic crates are silent. The crate alert toggle is not available in Prison settings, so you cannot hide these lines.
Guaranteed rewards, milestones and rerolls#
- Guaranteed reward: the Rebirth Crate gives an extra reward the 7th time you open it.
- Milestones: some event crates count your total openings across the whole network and pay a bonus at set openings. Each crate page lists its own milestones.
- Rerolls: some event crates roll a single reward. After the spin a Reward menu offers Keep Reward or Reroll. A reroll removes the item you landed from the pool for that opening and costs Gems: 899 for the first reroll, 1,349 for the second and 2,099 for the third, with a limit of 3 per opening. The cost is taken only after the new reward lands, and after your third reroll the reward is claimed automatically. See Gems.
History and counters#
/crate history(alias/crate replays) opens a menu named "(your name)'s Crates" with your recent openings. Each entry shows the crate, a reference number and when you opened it. Click one to see the rewards you won in a summary menu. Openings are kept for 7 days, and bulk openings are not listed. With no recent openings you see "This player hasn't opened any crates recently"./crate openslists how many times you have opened each crate./crate opens <crate>shows one crate. This count drives guaranteed rewards and milestones.- The game also ranks players by openings for each crate and refreshes that ranking every 30 seconds.
Crates in Prison#
The crates with a stable key source are listed below. Event crates and lootboxes rotate, so this page does not list which are on offer; check the store and the Crates warp for what is available today. Earned crates are keyed to progress or activity. Store crates are sold in the store (Store). Event crates are tied to a themed release and may leave the store at any time. The three minion eggs are listed separately below.
| Crate | How to get keys | Opening | Rewards per opening | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prestige Crate | Every prestige | Anywhere, Lootbox | 3 | Earned, permanent |
| Rebirth Crate | Every rebirth | Anywhere, Lootbox | 4, plus a guaranteed reward on the 7th opening | Earned, permanent |
| Vote Crate | Voting | Crate block, Menu | 1 | Earned, permanent |
| Epic Crate | Winning a chat typing game | Crate block, Menu | 1 | Earned, permanent |
| Skins Crate | Store | Crate block, Menu | 1 | Store |
| Event crates and lootboxes | Usually the store | Varies | Varies | Event |
Limited-time crate pages#
These crates and lootboxes have been offered for a limited time. Each page documents what that crate held; it is not necessarily available right now, so check the store and the crate preview.

Minion eggs#
The three eggs each hatch one level 1 minion, delivered as a voucher item that you right-click to add the minion to your collection. You place the key on the ground to hatch it, and an egg that stands on a crate block as a display is a showcase only: right-clicking it shows the preview. See Minions for what minions do.
| Egg | Minions it can hatch | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Crypt Egg | Sewer Rat, Crypt Hound, Sewer Hag, Wraith, Necromancer, Sewer Warden | Crypt Egg |
| Ore Egg | Coal Sprite, Iron Wisp, Redstone Imp, Gold Golem, Diamond Elemental, Emerald Titan | Ore Egg |
