Gang roles decide who can invite, kick, promote and spend a gang's perks. Every member holds exactly one of four ranks, and each action is tied to the lowest rank allowed to use it.
Ranks#
| Rank | Position | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Member | Lowest | Everyone who joins starts here |
| Officer | Second | Promoted by someone with the right to manage ranks |
| Co-owner | Third | Promoted by someone with the right to manage ranks |
| Owner | Highest | The player who created the gang |
A gang has exactly one Owner. The Owner rank cannot be assigned, and there is no way to hand it to another member. If the owner no longer wants the gang, the only option is to delete it (see Creating and Joining a Gang).
What each rank can do#
Each action needs a minimum rank. The table shows the starting values. The owner and any rank allowed to manage permissions can change the ones marked editable in the permissions menu.
| Action | Minimum rank by default | Editable |
|---|---|---|
| Use gang chat | Member | Yes |
| Invite players | Officer | Yes |
| Kick players | Officer | Yes |
| Manage ranks (promote and demote) | Co-owner | Yes |
| Manage permissions | Co-owner | Yes |
| Activate gang perks such as War Chest | Co-owner | No |
| Rename the gang or switch it between public and private | Owner | No |
| Delete the gang | Owner | No |
A rank always includes everything the ranks below it can do, so an Officer can chat, and a Co-owner can invite and kick as well.
The permissions menu#
Open it with /gang permissions or the Permissions button in Your Gang. The button is greyed out with the text "You don't have permission to do this." unless your rank may manage permissions.
Each row is one action. Left-click a row to raise the minimum rank one step, right-click to lower it one step. The rank cycles through Member, Officer, Co-owner and Owner. Changes are saved when you close the menu.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Only permissions you hold | You cannot edit an action that your own rank is not allowed to do. |
| No self lock-out | You cannot save a change that would remove an action from your own rank. |
| Owner is exempt | The Owner can change any editable permission. |
| Stale menus | If another player changed the permissions after you opened the menu, your save is refused and you must reopen it. |
Messages you may see: "Permissions applied.", "You cannot change a settings for a permission you do not have.", "Cannot apply new permission settings as they would cause you to lose some of your permissions." and "Cannot apply new permissions as they have changed since you opened the menu."
Viewing members#
/gang members opens the member list, and /gang members <player> opens the management screen for one member. The list shows every member's head, rank and beacons held. Members are sorted by rank, highest first, and then by beacons, so you can see who is carrying the gang. If your rank is above a member's rank, the entry also says "Click to manage this player!".
Promoting and demoting#
Use /gang setrank <player> <rank> with member, officer or co_owner, or click the member in the list and use Change rank. Left-click cycles upward and right-click cycles downward, and the new rank is applied when you close the screen.
You need the right to manage ranks, and these limits apply:
| Limit | Message |
|---|---|
| You can only assign ranks below your own | "Cannot assign a rank higher than your own!" |
| You cannot change someone whose rank is equal to or above yours | "Cannot change a rank of someone higher than you!" |
| The Owner's rank can never change | "Cannot set the owner's rank!" |
| The target must be in your gang | "Cannot set the rank of a player not in your gang!" |
In practice a Co-owner can only assign Member and Officer, and only the Owner can promote someone to Co-owner.
Kicking members#
Use /gang kick <player>, or the Kick member button in the management screen. You need the right to kick players, and you can only kick members whose rank is below yours. The Owner can never be kicked. The gang is told who kicked whom, and the kicked player can be invited again later.
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| You cannot kick a player with a higher rank than you. | The target's rank is equal to or above yours. |
| player is not in your gang. | The name you typed is not a member. |
| You cannot kick the owner of the gang. | The target is the Owner. |
Leaving#
Any member except the Owner can leave at any time with /gang leave. See Creating and Joining a Gang.
Shared mines#
All members of a gang can mine in each other's mines and visit them, unless the mine's owner has banned them. This is separate from the gang ranks: a Member has the same mine access as the Owner. See Mines.
