Ranks

Your rank is the level of your mine, from 1 to 10,000, bought one rankup at a time with money and the first step of the Prison progression ladder.

Ranks are the numbered levels of your personal mine. Every Prison player starts at rank 1 and buys each further rank with money, up to the maximum rank of 10,000. A higher rank adds richer blocks to your mine, makes the mine larger, and is the requirement for the next stages of progression, prestige and rebirth.

The progression ladder#

StageWhat it isReached by
RankLevel 1 to 10,000 of your minePaying money for each rankup
Prestige100 prestige levels, each a permanent income bonusReaching the required rank and paying the money fee; resets your rank to 1
RebirthStarts the whole ladder over with larger permanent bonusesPrestige 100, rank 10,000, a mined-block count and a token fee

Ranking up#

Ranking up always spends money, never tokens. The price of the next rank depends only on the rank you are at now (and on your rebirth count), so you can read the cost of any rank off the rankup cost table.

CommandAliasesWhat it does
/rankupBuys exactly one rank.
/maxrankup/rankupmaxBuys as many ranks in a row as your current money covers, up to rank 10,000, and charges the total in one payment.
/autorankupToggles automatic ranking up on or off.
/ranktop [page]/rankuptop, /rankup topShows the rank leaderboard. See Prison Leaderboards.

If you cannot afford the next rank the game tells you the full price and how much is missing: "You need $X to rank up ($Y missing)!". At rank 10,000, /rankup and /maxrankup answer "You are already at the max level!".

Auto rankup#

/autorankup is off by default and is remembered per player. While it is on, the game checks every 10 seconds whether you can afford the next rank, and buys up to 11 ranks in a row on each check, sending the usual "You ranked up to level N!" message for each. It switches itself off when you reach rank 10,000, and stops immediately if you toggle it off or log out.

What you see while ranking up#

  • Action bar. While you are in a mine, the action bar shows "Next Rank" with a progress bar and the percentage of the next rank's cost you can already pay. It refreshes every second.
  • Rankup Available title. In a mine, when your money first covers the next rank (and auto rankup is off) a "Rankup Available!" title appears with the hint "Use /rankup or toggle /autorankup". It appears once per rank, and again after the next rankup.
  • Rankup effect. Each successful rankup shows a "Rankup!" title with your new rank, plays a level-up sound and bursts a firework at your position.
  • Milestone announcement. Every 100th rank (100, 200, 300 and so on) is announced to Prison players as "(player) just reached rank (N)!". Each player can mute these with Toggle Rankup Alerts in Prison Options.

What a rank does#

  • Blocks. Each block in your mine becomes available at a set rank and, for most blocks, stops appearing at another. At rank 1 your mine holds stone and cobblestone; around rank 10,000 it holds emerald, amethyst, quartz, prismarine and dark prismarine blocks. The full schedule is in Mine Blocks.
  • Mine size. From Prestige 2 onward, your mine grows by one block on each side for every 25 ranks you have, up to a limit that rises with each prestige. See Mines.
  • Prestige gate. Prestige 1 needs rank 1,000, prestige 2 needs rank 2,000, and so on up to rank 10,000 from prestige 10 onward. See Prestige.
  • Chat and scoreboard. Your rank appears as a bracketed badge before your name in chat, and on the Prison scoreboard together with your prestige and rebirth count.

Rank badge colours#

The number in your chat badge changes colour as your rank passes these thresholds.

From rankBadge colour
1Gold
50Dark gold
100Dusty rose
150Copper red
200Orange red
250 and higherBright red

After your first rebirth a second badge, "R" and your rebirth count in purple, is added next to the rank badge.

Skipping ranks#

A Rank Skip item raises your rank by a fixed number of levels without charging money. See Skip Items for how they work and where they drop.

What the rank costs rebirth changes#

Every rebirth multiplies the price of every rankup by 1.55. The multiplier compounds, so rank prices at five rebirths are about 8.95 times the base price. See the rebirth multiplier table.

Tips#

  • Use /maxrankup after a big sell, or leave /autorankup on while you mine and sell with autosell. Both reach the same rank; autorankup only spares you the typing.
  • Spending money on ranks and on backpack upgrades draw from the same balance. Rank 1,000 costs about $489 million in total from rank 1, and the first prestige then costs $1.5 billion, so most mid-game money goes to ranks and prestige.
  • Quests and achievements pay money. Work through Prison Quests and Prison Achievements alongside ranking up.
