Creating and Joining a Gang

How to create a gang, choose its name, invite players, join public gangs, leave, rename or disband a gang on Prison.

This guide covers the life of a gang: creating it, filling it, and closing it. For what a gang does once it exists, start at Gangs.

The gang menu#

Type /gang (alias /gangs) to open the Gangs menu.

ButtonWhat it does

Creating a gang#

  1. Make sure you are not already in a gang.
  2. Run /gang create <name> or use the Create a Gang button.
  3. You become the Owner of the new gang and an announcement of the new gang is broadcast.

Creating a gang costs nothing and has no rank requirement.

Gang names#

RuleDetail
Length3 to 16 characters
CharactersLetters, numbers and underscores
UniquenessThe name must not already be used by another gang
LanguageNames that fail the chat profanity filter are refused

If the name is refused you get one of these messages: "The gang name must be between 3 and 16 characters long and contain only letters and numbers.", "A gang with that name already exists." or "You are already in a gang."

New gangs are private: nobody can join without an invite.

Member limit#

A gang holds 6 members including the owner. The limit is read from the gang owner, not from the person joining. If the owner has the Savage or Caveman rank, the gang has one extra slot for 7 members in total. A full gang refuses every invite acceptance and every public join with "The gang is full."

Inviting players#

Inviting needs the Invite players permission, which Officers, Co-owners and the Owner have by default. The owner and Co-owners can change that in the permissions menu (see Gang Members and Roles).

  1. Run /gang invite <player>. The player must be online.
  2. The invited player receives a message with a clickable "click here" link. The whole gang is told who invited whom.
  3. The invited player accepts with /gang join <gang>, by clicking the link, or from Gang Invitations in the gang menu. They decline with /gang decline <gang> or in the same menu.
RuleDetail
Invite lifetimeAn invite expires 30 seconds after it is sent. Send it again if it lapses.
Self invitesYou cannot invite yourself.
Players in a gangYou cannot invite a player who is already in a gang.
Repeat invitesA player who already has a live invite from your gang cannot be invited again until it expires or is answered.
Several gangsA player can hold invites from several gangs at once. Accepting one ends the others' usefulness, because a player cannot be in two gangs.
Rank on joiningEveryone who joins starts as a Member.

Public and private gangs#

The owner controls whether a gang is listed in the Public Gangs menu.

  • /gang public true makes the gang public: "anyone can join it from the gang menu".
  • /gang public false returns it to invite-only.

Only the Owner can change this setting. A public join follows the same member limit as an invite and the new member starts as a Member.

Looking up gangs#

CommandResult
/gang info [gang]Shows a gang's name, leader and member list. Without an argument it shows your own gang. The argument can be a gang name or the name of a player in that gang.
/gang player [player]Shows the gang that a player belongs to, or your own gang when no player is given.

Leaving a gang#

Run /gang leave. You leave immediately, your gang is told, and you are free to create or join another gang. Your beacons stay with you.

The Owner cannot leave. The message reads "You cannot leave a gang you own. Use /gang delete instead!"

Renaming a gang#

The Owner can rename the gang with /gang rename <name>. The new name follows the same rules as a new gang name and must not be in use. A confirmation menu asks "Are you sure you want to rename your gang?" and warns that the action cannot be undone. Renaming is free, and the gang is told who renamed it.

Disbanding a gang#

The Owner can delete the gang with /gang delete or /gang disband.

  1. A confirmation menu appears: "Are you sure you want to delete your gang? WARNING: This action cannot be undone!"
  2. Confirm to delete. Every member is removed and the gang is told "Your gang has been deleted."

Deleting a gang removes its members, perk levels and leaderboard standing. Nobody loses beacons, because beacons belong to each player personally. Everyone can create or join a new gang straight away.
