Chest Shops

Prison chest shops let you sell to other players from your plot while you are away, priced in Tokens or Gems, with a searchable directory of every shop.

Chest Shops let you sell to other players from your plot while you are away. Each shop buys and sells one item at prices you set, in Tokens or Gems, and anyone can browse every shop with /shops.

For how chest shops work on every mode, see Chest Shops. This page covers what is specific to Prison.

Where you can build a shop#

Chest shops on Prison can only be created on a plot, never in the mines or at spawn. Open your plot menu with /plot and use its Chest Shops button to open /myshops.

You need permission to build on that plot: the plot owner, or a plot member whose role meets the plot's Build Access setting (see Plot Access and Settings). The shop belongs to the player who creates it, not to the plot owner.

MessageReason
You can only create chest shops on a plot! The chest is outside a plot area.
You don't have permissions to do this! You cannot build on this plot.

Creating a shop#

You can create a shop in two ways. Both need an empty chest on your plot with two free blocks above it, because the shop's floating label needs the space.

Sneak and left-click#

  1. Hold the item you want to sell.
  2. Hold Shift and left-click an empty chest.
  3. A Create Chestshop window asks "Are you sure you want to turn this chest into a Chestshop?" Click Yes, create chestshop, or Cancel.
  4. You see Chest transformed into a shop. The item you held becomes the shop's item.

This method is on by default. You can switch it off with the Toggle Chestshop Creation option in your settings menu (/options).

With a sign#

  1. Place a chest on your plot.
  2. Place a wall sign on the side of the chest.
  3. Write [SHOP], (SHOP) or shop on one line of the sign, with nothing else on that line. Capital letters do not matter.

When you finish the sign the chest becomes a shop, the sign is removed and returned to you, and the shop starts with no item. Right-click it to choose the item and prices. The sign method does not use the Toggle Chestshop Creation option.

Creation rules#

RuleDetail
BlockOnly a normal chest can become a shop. Barrels and other containers cannot.
ContentsThe chest must be empty: "This chest is not empty."
SpaceThe two blocks above it must be free: "You cannot create a shop here. It must have two blocks free above it."
ItemSome items are refused: "This item can't be sold in a chest shop." This covers items that are bound to you and may not leave your inventory.
LimitYou can own a limited number of shops: "You have reached the maximum amount of shops you can create."
LoadingIf your shop list is still loading: "Your chest shops are still loading. Please try again." Wait a moment and retry.

Setting up your shop#

Right-click your own shop to open the Shop menu. It has five parts.

SlotWhat it does
ItemPlace an item from your cursor into this slot to choose what the shop trades. Your item is not taken, the shop only remembers one copy of it as its template. Take it back out to clear the choice.
Set Buy Price (emerald)The price a customer pays you to take one item out of the shop.
Set Sell Price (gold ingot)The price you pay a customer who sells one item to your shop.
Storage (chest)Deposit items into the shop or withdraw them.
Transaction History (book)Lists the shop's trades.

You can only change the item while the shop holds no stock: "Cannot update shop item with items inside."

Prices#

Click Set Buy Price or Set Sell Price. A menu asks you to pick the currency, then a prompt asks for the amount.

ButtonCurrency
Tokens (emerald)Tokens
Gems (diamond)Gems
ClearRemoves this price and turns that side of the shop off
BackReturns to the shop menu
  • The amount is the price for one item and must be 0 or more.
  • The buy price prompt reads "Buy price (players pay YOU)". The sell price prompt reads "Sell price (YOU pay players)".
  • You see Selling price set: players now pay ... to buy this item from your shop. or Payout price set: you now pay ... when a player sells this item to your shop. after each change. Clearing shows Price cleared.
  • Setting a sell price asks you to confirm with Pay players for this item? The window warns that the payout comes out of your own money. If no buy price is set yet, it suggests you set one.
  • A sell price can never be higher than your buy price in the same currency: "Your payout price can't be higher than your selling price — players could buy cheap and sell straight back to drain your money."

A shop with no buy price cannot be bought from. A shop with no sell price cannot be sold to. A customer cannot trade with a shop that has no item or no price at all: "This shop is not set up properly."

Storage#

Your shop keeps its stock inside the shop itself, not in the chest. Open Storage and choose:

  • Deposit Items, to move items from your inventory into the shop.
  • Withdraw Items, to move items back into your inventory.

Each opens a menu with buttons for x1, x16, x32 and x64, and shows how many items are stored. A deposit takes the shop's item from your inventory. A withdrawal needs free space in your inventory.

MessageMeaning
You do not have enough items to deposit. You carry fewer items than the amount you clicked.
The shop does not have enough items to withdraw. The shop holds fewer items than the amount you clicked.
You do not have enough space to withdraw.Your inventory is full.
This shop is processing another operation. Please try again.A customer is mid-trade. Wait a moment.

Transaction history#

Transaction History lists the shop's trades. Each entry shows the item, the type (buy or sell), the player, the quantity, the price and how long ago it happened.

What the shop shows#

A floating label above each shop shows the owner's name, the shop item, the buy and sell prices (a red Disabled where a side is off), the current stock and the item itself. An unfinished shop shows Not Setup.

Buying from and selling to a shop#

Right-click someone else's shop. The Shop menu shows the item in the middle with two buttons.

ButtonMeaning
Buy (green)You buy from the shop. Shows the price per item and the stock. Disabled with "You cannot buy from this shop." when there is no buy price.
Sell (red)You sell to the shop. Shows the price you receive per item. Disabled with "You cannot sell to this shop." when there is no sell price.

Click a button to open the Transaction menu and choose x1, x16, x32 or x64. The trade happens immediately, with no extra confirmation.

When you buy, the price goes to the owner and the items leave the shop's stock. When you sell, the owner pays you from their own balance and the items join the shop's stock. The owner receives the full price, because the trade tax on Prison is 0%.

If you are the owner, right-clicking the shop opens your own Shop menu instead.

Owner notifications#

While you are online, each trade sends you a chat message, for example Name bought 16x item from your shop! (+total) or Name sold 16x item to your shop! (-total). Switch these off with the Chestshop Notifications option in /options.

Finding shops#

The directory#

/shops opens Chestshop > Directory, a paged list of every shop that has an item set. Each entry shows the item, Buy Price, Sell Price and Stock. Click an entry to teleport to the shop. If the teleport fails you are told why:

MessageReason
Shop not found. The shop no longer exists.
You are not allowed to teleport to this shop. You may not enter that area.
No safe location found near the shop. There is no safe spot to land.
The shop's server is currently unavailable. The server holding the shop is offline.

Buttons on the bottom row filter the list. Left-click to set a filter, and right-click an active filter to remove it.

ButtonFilter
Search (spyglass)Shops whose item name matches your text.
Stock (chest)Shops with at least this many items in stock. It starts at 1, so empty shops are hidden. Enter 0 to include them.
Buy Price (green concrete)Shops whose buy price is at least the amount you enter. Choose Tokens or Gems first.
Sell Price (red concrete)Shops whose sell price is at least the amount you enter. Choose Tokens or Gems first.
My Shops (ender chest)Opens your own shop list.

If nothing matches, the directory says No shops found and suggests you could be the first to sell that item.

My Shops#

/myshops lists the shops you own, each with its item, location, stock and prices. Click one to open its owner menu. A shop that has no item yet is listed as Shop Not Set Up.

You can manage a shop from this list only while its chest is on the server you are on and loaded. Otherwise you see "That shop is not reachable from here. Visit it to manage it."

If you own no shops, the list explains how to create one: place a chest on your plot, attach a sign reading [SHOP], right-click the shop to set its item and prices, or sneak and left-click a chest while holding the item you want to trade.

Protection and rules#

  • Only the owner can break a shop, and only when it holds no items: "You are not the owner of this shop." or "Cannot remove shop with items inside." Withdraw your stock first. Breaking an empty shop returns a chest.
  • Right-clicking a shop never opens the chest itself. Hoppers cannot move items into a shop.
  • Chests cannot be placed next to a shop on its north, east, south or west side, so shops never merge into double chests.
  • The two blocks above a shop must stay free. Blocks that would fill the space are rejected.
  • A shop cannot be changed or broken while a trade on it is in progress: "This shop is processing another operation."

Tips#

  • A shop's sell price is paid from your own balance. Keep enough Tokens or Gems in your balance, or customers see "The shop does not have enough money to sell."
  • Prices can only be set in Tokens or Gems on Prison. Check what comparable shops charge in the directory before you pick a price.
  • Withdraw all stock before you break a shop, then break the chest to get it back.
  • Set a stock filter of 0 in the directory when you want to see shops that are sold out.
  • Use Orders to ask other players for items instead of waiting for a shop to stock them.
