Chest shops let you sell items to other players, or buy items from them, using a chest. You set one item and the prices, stock the chest through a menu, and other players trade with it using menus. The system works across the network, see Chest Shops. This page covers what is specific to Survival.
Requirements#
- The shop must be a chest. Barrels, trapped chests and other containers do not work.
- The chest must be empty when you turn it into a shop ("This chest is not empty.").
- It must have two free blocks above it: "You cannot create a shop here. It must have two blocks free above it."
- It must be inside a claim where you have the Building permission. Outside claims, or in a claim where you lack Building permission, you see "You can't create a chestshop here." See Claim Protections.
- You must be under your shop limit, see below.
Create a shop#
There are two ways to turn a chest into a shop.
| Method | Steps |
|---|---|
| Shift-click | Hold the item you want to trade, sneak and left-click the chest, then confirm "Create Chestshop". The held item becomes the shop's item |
| Sign | Place a wall sign on the chest with a line reading exactly [SHOP], (SHOP) or shop (any capitalisation). The sign pops off and goes back to you, then you pick the item in the owner menu |
The Shift-click method can be switched off in your options menu with Toggle Chestshop Creation (/options); the sign method still works. When you create a shop you see "Chest Shop Created! This chest is now a shop."
While the shop exists, solid blocks cannot be placed in the two blocks above it, and you cannot place another chest right next to it.
Set the item and prices#
Right-click the shop to open the owner menu:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Item slot | Click an item in your inventory to select what the shop trades |
| Set Buy Price (emerald) | The price players pay to buy one item from your shop |
| Set Sell Price (gold ingot) | The price you pay a player who sells one item to your shop |
| Storage | Deposit and withdraw stock |
| Transaction History | A log of every trade at the shop |
- Choose the currency, Money or Gems, then type the amount in the prompt. Clear removes a price.
- Leave a price empty to disable that direction: the shop then shows "Disabled" for it.
- Setting a sell price asks you to confirm first ("Pay players for this item?"), because payouts come out of your own balance.
- When both prices use the same currency, the sell price you pay can never be higher than your buy price: "Your payout price can't be higher than your selling price". This stops players buying cheap and selling straight back.
- You cannot change the item while the shop holds stock: "Cannot update shop item with items inside."
- Some items cannot be sold in chest shops ("This item can't be sold in a chest shop.").
Stock#
Open Storage and choose Deposit Items or Withdraw Items, then pick an amount of 1, 16, 32 or 64. The menu shows how much is stored. Items players buy from you are taken from the stock, and items players sell to you are added to it.
Trading at a shop#
Right-click a shop to open its menu. The Buy button (green) shows the price and stock, and the Sell button (red) shows the payout price. A disabled direction shows "You cannot buy from this shop." or "You cannot sell to this shop." Choose x1, x16, x32 or x64.
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| "You do not have enough money to buy." | You cannot afford it |
| "The shop does not have enough items to buy." | The stock is lower than the amount you chose |
| "The shop does not have enough money to sell." | The owner cannot pay out |
| "You do not have enough space to buy." | Your inventory is full |
| "You do not have enough items to sell." | You are selling more than you carry |
| "This shop is not set up properly." | The owner has not chosen an item or any price yet |
| "This shop is processing another operation." | Someone else is trading, try again |
Survival charges no tax on chest shop trades: whoever receives the money gets the full price.
Hologram and notifications#
- A hologram floats above the shop with the owner's name ("<owner>'s Chestshop"), the item, the buy and sell prices and the stock.
- While you are online, each trade with your shop sends you "<player> bought 5x <item> from your shop! (+total)" or "<player> sold 5x <item> to your shop! (-total)". Switch these off with Chestshop Notifications in
/options.
Directory and My Shops#
| Command | What it opens |
|---|---|
/shops (alias /chestshops) | The Chestshop Directory: every shop with its item, stock and prices. Filter by Search (item name), minimum Stock, minimum Buy Price and minimum Sell Price; right-click a filter to clear it. Click a shop to teleport to it after a short warm-up |
/myshops (alias /mychestshops) | My Chest Shops: every shop you own with its item, location, stock and prices. Click one to open its owner menu |
- The directory's minimum stock starts at 1, so empty shops are hidden until you change it.
- The
/shopmenu has a Chest Shop Directory button that opens the same directory. Buying an item there that the server does not sell but players stock opens the directory searched for that item. - If you own no shops,
/myshopssays "You do not have any chest shops." A shop that has no item shows as "Shop Not Set Up". - You can manage a shop from My Shops only while you are on its server and its area is loaded; otherwise you see "That shop is not reachable from here. Visit it to manage it."
Remove a shop#
Break the shop chest to remove it. You can only remove a shop you own ("You are not the owner of this shop."), and only when its stock is empty: "Cannot remove shop with items inside." Withdraw the stock first. You get the chest back.
Shop limit#
You can own 3 shops with no rank. Ranks raise it.
| Rank | Chest shops |
|---|---|
| No rank | 3 |
| Axolotl | 25 |
| Allay | 50 |
| Glare | 75 |
| Illusioner | 100 |
| Hoglin | 125 |
| Strider | 150 |
| Netherite | 150 (inherits Strider) |
Reaching the limit shows "You have reached the maximum amount of shops you can create." See Donor Ranks.
Tips#
- Claim the chunk first and put the shop inside it. See Claiming Land.
- Keep your shops stocked: an empty shop cannot sell and a shop with no money to pay out cannot buy.
- Use the directory to check prices before you set yours.
