A claim protects its chunk from other players the moment it is created. This page lists what is covered, what is not, and which other Survival features are tied to claims.
What a claim protects#
Against players who lack the right role, claims block:
- Placing and breaking blocks, including containers, crops, spawners and decorations.
- Opening chests, barrels, furnaces, hoppers and shulker boxes.
- Using doors, buttons, levers, pressure plates and fence gates.
- Hurting or using animals, villagers and golems, and breeding animals.
- Using boats and minecarts, and breaking them.
- Item frames, paintings, armor stands, flower pots and anvils.
- Picking up and dropping items, fishing and throwing tridents, unless the player is a guest.
- Triggering a raid.
Each of these is a permission you can loosen or tighten. See Claim Permissions.
When a player is blocked, they see "You do not have permission to do that here." on the action bar.
Against the environment#
With the default toggles, a claim also blocks explosions and explosion damage to players and mobs, hostile mob block changes and fire. Explosions never break blocks in the Survival overworld, Nether and End, claimed or not. See Claim Toggles.
Around the edges#
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Water or lava flowing in from unclaimed land | Stopped at the border |
| Water or lava flowing from one claim into another | Allowed only if someone who is a member of the source claim could build in the destination |
| Pistons pushing or pulling blocks across a border | Cancelled unless someone in the piston's own claim could build in the other claim. A piston outside any claim cannot push into or pull from a claim |
/top and /bottom inside someone else's claim | Not allowed without Building permission, because they pass through solid blocks |
| Flying into a claim that bars flight | Flight is switched off as you cross the border and fall damage from that moment is cancelled |
Banned players are also moved out and cannot teleport in. See Claim Bans.
What a claim does not protect#
- Unclaimed land is open. Anyone can build, break, open containers and take items outside claims.
- Claims do not stop damage you take from other players. PvP is controlled by the world rules, and the main Survival worlds have PvP turned off. See World Protection Rules.
Features that need a claim#
| Feature | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Chest shops | Must be created inside a claim where you may build. Otherwise you see "You can't create a chestshop here." See Chest Shops on Survival |
| Player warps | Must be created inside a claim where you have the Create Home permission. See Player Warps |
Homes (/sethome) | Allowed outside claims. Inside someone else's claim you need the Create Home permission, otherwise "You can't set a home here." See Homes and Teleports |
| Spawners | Can only be placed inside a claim you own or are a guest of, up to the claim's spawner cap. See Claim Upgrades |
| Town homes and warps | Only on claims that belong to your town. See Town Home and Warps |
Entry and exit notices#
Crossing a claim border shows "You have entered <owner>'s claim." or "You have left <owner>'s claim." in the action bar. Town land says "town claim" instead.
