Mining Skill

Mining levels up as you break ores, cobblestone and deepslate, and unlocks Haste, a mining explosion, double loot and Enchanted Items perks.

Mining is one of Survival's Skills. You gain Mining XP by breaking ores, cobblestone and deepslate, and the skill unlocks four perks as it levels: a short Haste effect, a mining explosion, a chance of double loot and a chance of bonus Enchanted Items.

Earning XP#

Breaking one of these blocks with any tool gives Mining XP. Blocks placed by a player in the last 30 minutes give no XP, and neither do blocks broken by server-generated effects.

Perks#

Perks unlock automatically as you reach the level shown and are listed under each level in the skill tree menu (/skills).

PerkUnlocks atHow it triggers
HasteLevel 20Chance on every block you break
ExplosionLevel 40Right-click a block with a pickaxe, then break a block
Enchanted ItemsLevel 50Chance on mining an ore that drops a matching item
FortuneLevel 50Chance on mining an XP block

Perk chances are rolled each time the trigger happens. A perk that has a cooldown can fire at most once per cooldown, and a perk without a cooldown rolls on every trigger. Turn all perks off or on with the Skill Trigger Perks option in /options.

Haste#

Every time you break a block there is a chance to gain Haste I for a limited time. The cooldown is counted from the moment the effect starts, so after it triggers you cannot get it again until the effect has ended and the cooldown has passed.

Chance and duration grow with each level: chance = 1% + 1% for every level from the unlock level (so 2% at the unlock level), capped at 100%; cooldown = 10 minutes minus 1 second per level from the unlock level; duration = 3 seconds plus 1 second per level from the unlock level.

Explosion#

The Explosion perk lets you clear a small area in one swing.

  1. Hold any pickaxe and right-click a block. If the perk is off cooldown, the action bar shows Explosion Ready! (Break block). If it is on cooldown, the action bar shows Explosion Cooldown: with the time left.
  2. Within a few seconds of priming, break any block. The block you break and all other blocks within 2 blocks of it (except bedrock) are broken instantly without costing pickaxe durability.
  3. The cooldown starts as soon as the explosion fires.

cooldown = 10 minutes minus 1 second per level from the unlock level.

LevelCooldown

509 minutes 49 seconds
759 minutes 24 seconds
1008 minutes 59 seconds

You can switch just this perk off with the Toggle Skill Mining Explosion option in /options.

Fortune#

When you break an ore, cobblestone, deepslate or netherite block from the table above that was not placed by a player in the last day, there is a chance that the block's normal drops are doubled. Drops that cannot fit twice into a stack are not doubled beyond a full stack. This perk has no cooldown.

chance = 1% + 1% for every level from the unlock level (so 2% at the unlock level), capped at 100%.

Enchanted Items#

When an ore block drops an item that has an enchanted version, there is a chance that one Enchanted item is dropped as well. See Enchanted Items for the list and sell prices.

chance = 0.1% + 1% for every level from the unlock level (so 1.1% at the unlock level), capped at 100%; cooldown = 10 minutes minus 1 second per level from the unlock level.

Tips#

  • Mining Fortune and Enchanted Items only count natural blocks: blocks placed by a player in the last day do not trigger them, and blocks placed in the last 30 minutes give no XP.
  • Mining ores also advances the Mining quests: see Quests.
