Portals and World Travel

Portals and World Travel

How Nether and End portals map between Survival worlds, the 1:8 coordinate rule, where each portal leads, and every other way to move between worlds.

Portals connect the three permanent Survival worlds. Everything else, including the resource worlds, is reached by command. Portals work like vanilla ones, with the coordinate rules below.

Portal destinations#

PortalFromToWhere you arrive
Nether portalOverworldNetherOverworld X and Z divided by 8, at the nearest safe spot within about 20 blocks sideways and 80 vertically
Nether portalNetherOverworldNether X and Z multiplied by 8, at the nearest safe spot within about 20 blocks sideways and 80 vertically
End portalOverworldEndThe centre of the End, at height 100, moved to a safe spot if needed
End exit portalEndOverworldYour respawn point: your bed, or spawn if you have none
  • The destination is chosen by coordinates, so you do not need to build a matching portal first. No portal is built where you arrive, so build one there if you want to go back the same way.
  • Your height is kept as the starting point of the search; only X and Z are converted.
  • Dividing by 8 means the whole overworld maps into the middle of the Nether, roughly -4,375 to 4,375 on each axis. A Nether portal further out than that takes you to the edge of the overworld.
  • A 5 second cooldown stops you being sent twice by the End portal.
  • You may be moved to a different server as part of the trip. This is automatic.
