Claiming turns the chunk you are standing in into your protected land. You claim with the Claim Item (a golden hoe) or with /claim, and you always confirm with a second action so you never claim by accident.
Get a Claim Item#
- The Claim Item is a golden hoe named "Claim Item" with the lore "Right click to claim land".
- The starter kit new players receive contains one. The kit can be claimed again with
/kit defaultonce its 14-day cooldown is over. - You do not need the item:
/claimdoes exactly the same thing. - You cannot break blocks while the Claim Item is in your main hand, so it never breaks anything by accident.
Claim a chunk#
- Stand anywhere in the chunk you want. Use
/chunkbordersif you need to see where the chunk edges are. - Right-click with the Claim Item, or run
/claim. The chunk is outlined with red particles for 10 seconds and the game tells you to repeat the action. - Repeat the same action within 10 seconds while you are still in the same chunk. You see "Successfully claimed this chunk."
If you walk into another chunk before confirming, the outline restarts for the new chunk and you confirm again there. If you wait more than 10 seconds, the first request expires.
While you hold the Claim Item, the borders of claims within about two chunks of you are drawn with particles: green for your claims, red for everyone else's. See Seeing Claims.
Where you can claim#
| World | Claimable |
|---|---|
| Overworld (the grid) | Yes |
| Nether | Yes |
| End | Yes |
| Spawn, PvP world, AFK world | No |
| Resource worlds (overworld, Nether, End) | No |
| Within 32 blocks of a sector line | No |
See Survival Worlds for how the worlds fit together.
Claim messages#
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| "You can't claim here." | This world or server does not allow claiming |
| "You can't claim so close to the edge of a sector." | Part of the chunk is within 32 blocks of a sector line or the world edge. See Sectors and the World Edge |
| "This chunk is already claimed." | Somebody (you, another player or a town) owns it |
| "You've reached the maximum number of claims." | You are at your claim limit. See Claim Limits |
| "Type /claim again to claim this chunk." | Preview shown, repeat within 10 seconds to confirm |
Use /claim inside your own claim#
Run /claim while standing in a chunk you already own and it opens the Manage Claim menu instead of starting a new claim. /claim edit opens the same menu and tells you if you are not in one of your claims. See Managing Claims.
Unclaim a chunk#
- Stand in the claim and run
/unclaim. A confirmation menu asks "Are you sure you want to unclaim this chunk?" with Yes, unclaim and Cancel. /unclaim --confirmskips the menu.- You can also use Delete Claim in the Manage Claim menu.
- Unclaimed land is immediately unprotected. Anything you built there can be taken or broken by other players.
- Land claimed by a town is released with
/town unclaim, not with/unclaim. See Town Claims.
Transfer a claim#
/claim transfer <player> gives the claim you are standing in to another player. A confirmation menu ("Transfer Claim", "This action cannot be undone.") asks you to confirm.
- The new owner must have a free slot under their own claim limit. Otherwise you see that they have reached their claim limit.
- You cannot transfer a claim to yourself.
- Town claims cannot be transferred this way.
Selling claims for money goes through the claim market instead. See Claim Market.
Tips#
- Claim the chunk before you place chests, spawners, homes or farms. Land that is not yours yet can be claimed by anyone who finds it.
- Walk the edges with
/claim particleson to make sure every chunk of your base is covered. - Set a home inside your claim with
/sethomeso you can always return. See Homes and Teleports.
