Challenge Races

Challenge races are server-wide first-to-finish contests on Survival: break a target number of one block type before anyone else and win a prize.

Challenge Races are server-wide contests on Survival. At any time up to ten races are open; each one asks you to break a target number of a single block type, such as 10,000 Stone or 96 Emerald Ore. The first player to reach the target wins the prize, the race closes for a cooldown, and then a new round opens, usually with a different block.

The challenges menu#

Run /races to open SMP Challenges. Each race is one icon:

IconStateWhat it shows
ChestActiveThe race name, the goal (First on SMP to break <N>x <block> wins!), how to start counting, the current leader and their progress, and Prize: Hidden until completion. Click it to refresh it and get the same details in chat
Block of GoldFinishedThe winner, the time until the race reopens, and the prize that was paid
Gray Stained Glass PaneNot startedA race whose first round has not opened yet. It opens with the first qualifying break

If challenges are switched off you see Challenges are taking a break — check back soon!

How a race works#

  1. A round opens. Everyone online sees A challenge is open: <race>! First on SMP to break <N>x <block> wins. The prize stays hidden until completion. /races
  2. Progress counts automatically. The race starts counting with your first qualifying natural block break. There is no sign-up.
  3. First to the target wins. The winner sees You finished the <race> challenge first! Your prize is on its way. and everyone sees <player> was the first on SMP to finish the <race> challenge and claimed <prize>!
  4. Cooldown. The race stays closed for its cooldown (3 to 12 hours depending on the race slot). The first time you break that block during the cooldown you see The <race> challenge reopens in <time>. once.
  5. A new round opens. The round reopens by itself when the cooldown ends, with a different block.

Races are solo: your breaks count for you only.

What counts#

CountsDoes not count
Breaking the race's block yourself, including area breaks from your own tools and perksBlocks that a player ever placed
Natural blocks onlyBlocks broken by robots, collectors or other automation
The exact block named in the raceVariants of it: Iron Haul counts Iron Ore but not Deepslate Iron Ore, and Diamond Rush counts only Deepslate Diamond Ore

Prizes#

Prizes are paid straight to your account. Each round's prize is hidden until someone wins it; the menu shows the prize only on a finished race. A prize belongs to the race slot rather than the block, so it does not change with the block drawn for that slot. The ten slots pay:

PrizeCooldown after a winSlots

$150,0006 hours1
$250,0003 hours1

Blocks that can come up#

When a round reopens, its block is drawn at random from this list. A block already in use by another open race is not drawn again, and the new block is different from the previous one.

  • Check /races for the leader's progress before committing to a long race.
