The Lifesteal Tools enchants are eight enchants for pickaxes, axes, shovels, hoes and shears that make gathering faster and more rewarding: extra and doubled drops, bonus ores from stone, auto-smelting, whole veins and whole trees in one break, permanent Haste and saved durability. All of them come from runes bought in the enchant shop.
How tools enchants work#
- Each enchant has its own target. Excavator, Quickstrike, Smelter and Sturdy work on any tool: pickaxes, axes, shovels, hoes and shears. Fortune+, Geologist and Veinminer work only on pickaxes, and Lumberjack only on axes. See Enchant Targets.
- The block enchants (Excavator, Fortune+, Geologist, Lumberjack, Smelter and Veinminer) read the tool in your main hand when you break a block. Quickstrike works while the tool is in your main hand or off hand. Sturdy works on the tool that is about to lose durability.
- One tool can carry several of these enchants, and each is checked separately.
- Excavator, Fortune+ and Geologist roll once for every block you break, and Sturdy rolls each time the tool would lose durability. Lumberjack, Smelter and Veinminer have no roll and work on every break; the in-game descriptions of Lumberjack and Veinminer show this as a 100% chance.
- Smelter changes the drops first, so Excavator and Fortune+ add to the smelted items. A pickaxe with Smelter and Fortune+ turns iron ore into iron ingots and can double them.
- Blocks broken by Veinminer and Lumberjack cost no durability. Each one is broken as if you had mined it with the tool, so it drops what your tool would give, and blocks you are not allowed to break are left alone.
- Rune prices: Common 5,000 XP, Uncommon 10,000 XP, Rare 20,000 XP. A rune gives a random enchant of its rarity; see Runes.
- Lifesteal also has an Extraction Scroll, which can pull an enchant off a tool into a book. See Extraction Scroll.

Enchant details#
Excavator#
Excavator is a Common enchant for any tool. When you break one of the blocks below, it has a 5% chance per level, up to 25% at level V, to add 1 to one of the items the block drops. If the block drops several kinds of item, one of them is picked at random. A stack never goes above 64.
It works on these blocks:
- Stone: stone, cobblestone, deepslate, cobbled deepslate, granite, andesite, diorite, tuff, blackstone, basalt, netherrack, end stone, calcite and dripstone blocks.
- Ores: coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, emerald, lapis and diamond ores with their deepslate versions, nether gold ore, nether quartz ore and ancient debris.
- Soil: dirt, grass blocks, coarse dirt, podzol, mycelium, rooted dirt and mud.
- Sand and gravel: sand, red sand, gravel, soul sand, soul soil and clay.
- Logs: oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, cherry, dark oak, mangrove and pale oak logs, and crimson and warped stems.
Blocks placed by players do not count, and it does nothing while the tool in your main hand has Silk Touch.
Fortune+#
Fortune+ is an Uncommon enchant for pickaxes. When you mine a natural ore, it has a 25% chance per level to double the amount of one item the ore drops, picked at random if there are several. Levels IV and V both give a 100% chance, so from level IV on every ore is doubled. A stack never goes above 64.
- It works on coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, emerald, lapis and diamond ores with their deepslate versions, and on nether gold ore, nether quartz ore and ancient debris.
- The doubling is applied to the drop after vanilla Fortune, so the two stack. A diamond ore that drops 3 diamonds with Fortune gives 6 when Fortune+ triggers.
- Ores placed by players do not count, and it does nothing while the pickaxe has Silk Touch.
- The in-game description says it doubles "one item drop": it doubles one whole stack of the drop, not a single item.
Geologist#
Geologist is a Rare enchant for pickaxes. When you break stone, deepslate, cobblestone or cobbled deepslate, it has a 1% chance per level, up to 5% at level V, to drop one bonus item next to the block: raw iron, raw copper, coal, raw gold or a diamond. Each of the five has the same chance of being picked.
- The bonus is dropped on its own, so Smelter does not smelt it.
- The block itself still drops as normal.
Lumberjack#
Lumberjack is an Uncommon enchant for axes. When you break a log, the axe also breaks the logs of the same type that are connected to it, up to 16 logs plus 8 per level: 24 at level I and 56 at level V. It works on every break, with no chance roll.
- It works on oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, cherry, dark oak, mangrove and pale oak logs, crimson and warped stems, and mushroom stems. Stripped logs, wood blocks and leaves are not broken.
- Only logs of exactly the same type are followed, so an oak log does not chain into a birch log next to it.
- Logs count as connected when they touch on a side, or touch diagonally on the same layer.
- The log you break counts toward the limit. The limit is checked after each step of the search, so a large tree can lose a few logs more than the number in the table.
- The extra logs cost no durability.
Quickstrike#
Quickstrike is a Common enchant for any tool. While you hold the tool in your main hand or off hand, you have Haste matching the level: Haste I, II or III, with no time limit. The effect shows no particles and no icon.
- If you already have an equal or stronger Haste, Quickstrike does not replace it.
- Switching away from the tool clears your Haste effect, which can also end Haste from a beacon or potion that is active at that moment.
- Drinking milk removes it. Switch to another slot and back to get it again.
- Holding two Quickstrike tools gives the higher level; the levels do not add up.
Smelter#
Smelter is an Uncommon enchant for any tool with a single level. Every item a block drops while the tool is in your main hand is replaced by its smelted result, as if it had gone through a furnace, in the same amount. Raw iron becomes iron ingots, raw gold becomes gold ingots, raw copper becomes copper ingots, cobblestone becomes stone, sand becomes glass, logs become charcoal and ancient debris becomes netherite scrap.
- Items that cannot be smelted, such as coal or diamonds, drop unchanged.
- It does not give the experience a furnace would.
- It is applied before Excavator and Fortune+, so their extra items are smelted too.
- It works on blocks only. Mob drops are not smelted.
Sturdy#
Sturdy is a Common enchant for any tool. Every time the tool would lose durability, Sturdy has a 10% chance per level to cancel that loss, up to 50% at level V. It covers every use that costs durability, such as mining, chopping or hitting with an axe.
Veinminer#
Veinminer is a Rare enchant for pickaxes. When you mine an ore, the pickaxe also mines the ores of the same type that are connected to it, up to 8 ores plus 4 per level: 12 at level I and 28 at level V. It works on every break, with no chance roll.
- It works on coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, emerald, lapis and diamond ores and their deepslate versions. Nether gold ore, nether quartz ore and ancient debris are not included.
- Only ores of exactly the same block are followed, so iron ore and deepslate iron ore do not chain into each other.
- Ores count as connected when they touch on a side, or touch diagonally on the same layer.
- The ore you mine counts toward the limit. The limit is checked after each step of the search, so a large vein can give a few ores more than the number in the table.
- The extra ores cost no durability and drop what your pickaxe would give, so Fortune, Smelter and Fortune+ apply to them.
