The Grid is how Lifesteal fits worlds this big on the network. Each dimension is cut into rectangular sections, and each section is run separately. You move between them as if they were one world.
Sections#
| Dimension | Sections |
|---|---|
| Overworld | A 10,000 x 10,000 spawn square in the centre, plus four outer sections of 25,000 x 25,000 blocks, one per quadrant |
| Nether | One section, 50,000 x 50,000 |
| End | One section, 50,000 x 50,000 |
The outer sections of the Overworld meet along the X and Z axes (the lines X = 0 and Z = 0) and along the edge of the spawn square at 5,000 blocks.
Crossing a seam#
Walk across the boundary between two sections and you are moved to the next section automatically. You keep your movement and your view, and nothing asks you to reconnect. Seams are the lines where sections meet. If a transfer is already in progress it is not repeated; there is a short pause before you can cross again.
The buffer zone#
The strip within 32 blocks of a seam is a buffer zone. In it you cannot:
- place or break blocks,
- empty buckets or fill them,
- use blocks and containers, or
- grow crops and trees, spread fire or move blocks with pistons.
You see "You can't build so close to the edge of a sector." The rule keeps builds from being cut in half by a seam. Build well inside a section.
The edge of the world#
The outside edges of the Overworld, Nether and End are walls: "You have reached the edge of the world." They sit at 25,000 blocks from the centre on each axis.
Combat tag at seams#
The edge of a section counts as a safe zone you may not enter while combat-tagged. In practice you cannot walk across a seam, or leave the section, while your combat tag is active, and you see the edge as a red glass wall. Wait for the tag to end. See Combat Tag and Safe Zones.
Time and weather#
Time of day and weather are synchronised between the outer sections every 10 seconds. The spawn section runs its own.
Respawn rescue#
If you die and the game places you in the wrong place for a moment, a safety check runs 2 seconds after respawn and moves you to the grid spawn if needed.
