The combat tag marks players who are fighting. While you are tagged you cannot leave a fight by teleporting to safety or running to spawn, and if you disconnect, a stand-in called the combat logger takes your place.
Getting tagged#
You are tagged for 30 seconds whenever you damage another player or another player damages you. Both players are tagged. Every new hit restarts the 30 seconds.
- You see "You have entered combat!" when the tag starts and "You are no longer in combat!" when it ends.
- Entering combat closes any open inventory menu and takes you out of a vehicle.
- Damage from an ender pearl landing does not tag you.
- Taking void damage while you are already tagged refreshes the tag.
- The tag is removed when you die, and when you kill someone the killer's tag is cleared too.
What you cannot do while tagged#
| Restriction | Detail |
|---|---|
| Commands | Every command except /msg is blocked: "You can't use this command while in combat!" |
| Safe zones | You cannot walk into a safe zone, and you cannot teleport into one: "You can't teleport into a safe zone while in combat!" The edges between grid sections count as safe zones, so you cannot cross a section seam either. |
| Warzone escape | You can use ender pearls inside a warzone, but not to leave it: "You can't teleport out of the warzone while in combat!" |
| End portals | "You can't use End portals while in combat!" You stay put until the tag ends. |
| Elytra | Gliding with an elytra is disabled. |
| Vehicles | You cannot enter boats, minecarts or other vehicles. |
| Witch's Broom | A trident with the Witch's Broom enchant will not carry you into a safe zone. |
Chorus fruit teleporting is disabled for everyone. See PvP Cooldowns and Restrictions.
Combat exit areas#
Some areas are combat exits. Walking into one clears your combat tag and teleports you to safety: "You have been teleported to safety."
Logging out in combat#
If you leave the game while tagged, a combat logger appears where you stood:
- It is a villager named
Logger <your name>with a countdown of seconds left, and it has your current health. - It stands still, does not fight back and holds a copy of your whole inventory, including armour and off-hand. Your own inventory is cleared while it exists.
- It lasts 30 seconds.
| What happens to the logger | Result |
|---|---|
| It survives 30 seconds | It vanishes and you keep your items. |
| You log back in while it is alive | You reclaim it: you return to its position with its inventory and health. "You have reclaimed your combat logger!" |
| Someone kills it | Your items drop on the spot, you lose 1 heart, and the killer receives a Heart item. Your saved logout position is reset to spawn. |
When a logger is killed, players with PvP alerts on see "<killer> killed <victim>'s combat logger!". You can switch PvP alerts in /options. If a combat logger death takes you to 0 hearts, you are eliminated the next time you log in. See Gaining and Losing Hearts and Elimination.
Loot after a kill#
When you kill a player, the items they drop are locked to you for 15 seconds. Other players cannot pick them up until the lock ends. After 15 seconds anyone can take them.
Staying out of trouble#
- Do not log out while tagged. Wait for "You are no longer in combat!".
- Plan your retreat before the fight: you cannot use /spawn, /home or most other commands while tagged.
- Kills reward a Heart item, so a fight you walk away from can still be chased. See Hearts.
