Island Permissions

Every island permission with the role it needs by default, how the Island Permissions menu cycles a permission through the roles, who may change it and what each permission actually blocks.

Island Permissions decide which role is needed to do each thing on an island: building, opening chests, hurting animals, inviting members and more. Every island has 63 permissions, each set to the lowest role that may use it. The owner changes them in the Island Permissions menu, opened with /is permissions.

How permissions work#

  • A permission names the lowest role that may do something. Anyone at that role or above may do it, and anyone below may not. The roles from lowest to highest are Guest, Co-Op, Default, Trusted, Officer, Co-Owner and Owner, see Roles.
  • Protection applies in every world of an island, meaning its Overworld, Nether and End. Nothing here applies outside islands.
  • Your role is read on the island you are standing on. On your own island it is your member role. On someone else's island you are a Guest, or a Co-Op if that island added you as a co-op. A role you hold on one island means nothing on another.
  • Visitors are Guests. By default a Guest may only Interact with blocks.
  • A permission can never be set above Co-Owner, except Disband Island. A Co-Owner therefore always holds every permission except that one, and the owner holds all of them.
  • Actions that the world protection blocks, such as breaking a block or opening a chest, are cancelled without a message. Commands and menu buttons answer "You don't have permission to do that!".

Opening the menu#

Run /is permissions (alias /is perms) or click Island Permissions in the island menu, see The Island Menu. Every member can open it. Co-ops cannot.

The window is titled Island Permissions and shows 21 permissions per page on 3 pages, 63 in all. Page 1 runs from Animal Breeding to Farm Tramping, page 2 from Fertilize to Pick up Item Drops and page 3 from Pick up Fish to Claim Challenge Relic. Arrows at the bottom corners change page.

Each permission is an item with its name, a one-line description and the current setting:

Click to cycle the permission's role

Role: <current role> -> <next role>

Five permissions have no custom icon or text and are shown as a plain paper with "No description.": Set Island Name, Manage Generator Filter, Manage Recruitment Listing, Review Island Applications and Claim Challenge Relic. They work like the others.

Changing a permission#

A click moves the permission to the next role in the cycle. The change is saved at once, with no confirmation, and you see "Your island permissions have been updated!".

The cycle goes up one role per click and wraps back to Guest at the top: Guest, Co-Op, Default, Trusted, Officer, Co-Owner, then Guest again.

  • Guest as the setting means "anyone". Co-Op means "co-ops and members". Default means "members only".
  • The top of the cycle is Co-Owner. The only exception is Disband Island, which also offers Owner.
  • A viewer who is not the owner only cycles through roles below their own and then wraps to Guest.
  • A permission shows the role it effectively needs. Claim Challenge Relic starts at Co-Owner because no permission other than Disband Island can require more than that.

Who can change permissions#

Changing permissions needs the Set Permissions permission, which belongs to Officer and above by default. On top of that, the server refuses a save from anyone whose role is lower than the highest role any permission of the island asks for, before or after the change. Disband Island asks for Owner by default, so with default settings only the island owner can save a change. An Officer or Co-Owner who opens the menu and clicks gets "You don't have permission to do that!".

Default settings#

This table shows every permission, the role it needs by default and what each role can do on a fresh island. Roles are cumulative: a role can do everything the roles below it can. Yes means the role holds the permission, a dash means it does not. The rows follow the order of the menu.

Custom blocks that ignore permissions#

A few special blocks are usable by everyone no matter what the island's permissions say. Chest shops are the main case: any player, visitors included, can use a chest shop block on an island to buy from or sell to it. See Chest Shops. Breaking or placing one is still controlled by Break Blocks and Place Blocks.

These entries appear in the menu but do not change anything on Skyblock islands:

Messages you may see#

MessageMeaning
"Your island permissions have been updated!"A click was saved
"You don't have permission to do that!"The server refused the change, or a command or button needs a permission you lack
"You don't have an island!"You are not a member of any island, so there is no menu to open

Tips#

  • Change one permission at a time and test as a visitor with a friend.
  • Because Trusted is empty by default, it is the cheapest way to build a middle tier.
  • Lowering a permission to Guest opens it to every player who can reach the island. Do it only for harmless actions.
  • An open island is still protected. Only the actions listed in the table above are allowed to visitors.
